Pogo Linux today announced server, storage, and workstation products using the new Intel Xeon processor 5500 series processors. The 5500 series uses a variety of new technologies to run Linux applications more quickly, and use less power than previous offerings. Intel's latest processors include many revolutionary technologies -- an integrated memory controller, DDR3 memory, hyper-threading and turbo boost -- that will significantly improve the performance of demanding Linux applications. Intelligent power management and power savings from the new mirco-architecture and memory configuration will make the new platforms some of the most efficient systems on the market.

Main features include:

  • Integrated memory controller
  • Hyper-threading
  • Intelligent power management

The new Pogo platforms take full advantage of Intel's new memory architecture. By integrating the memory controller into the processor and adding quick-path interconnects, these systems have best-in-class memory bandwidth. The move from FBD memory to DDR3 also improves performance by allowing the memory to run at a higher clock speed, with lower latency. All of these improvements yield a huge performance boost for memory-bound applications.

The new platforms also take advantage of specific processor performance features. The core architecture Intel® Core™micro-architecture is more efficient than the previous generation, and provides better performance per Ghz. Hyper-threading is re-introduced, providing increased performance for highly-threaded applications. This proven technology processes multiple threads more efficiently, to get the maximum performance possible out of each CPU core. The addition of the Turbo Boost feature allows the processor to raise core frequencies higher under certain conditions to get the most processing power possible. All of these new features help Pogo platforms run faster and more efficiently to meet the demands of our Linux customers.

In addition to a significant increase in speed, the new Intel processors also save power. DDR3 memory reduces power usage -- up to 30% under load and up to 50% at idle -- compared to FBD memory systems. Using the Intelligent Power Node Manager enables data center managers to get the most out of every rack space by controlling power usage on a per-system level.

Intel Nehalem CPUThe Pogo Linux line of servers, storage, and workstations are among the best-supported Linux systems in the industry.
