Data Center Strategy: Designing an OSNexus QuantaStor Object Storage Solution with the Online Design Tool

Posted on July 7, 2022 by rawee.k

Secure multi-tenant environments that prevent ransomware or data loss must be processed and stored on the right hardware. To accelerate the adoption of multi-tenant environments, we’ve partnered with OSNexus and Western Digital to provide data center users with a diverse range of data protection and security breach protection requirements an integrated hardware and software solution.

📐 Designing a High-Performance, Low-Latency QuantaStor Object Storage Solution

Within minutes, data center users with a diverse range of data protection and security breach protection requirements can quickly deploy highly scalable, high-performance object storage cluster solutions and expansion nodes on industry-standard hardware. Pogo Linux StorageDirector appliances have deep hardware integration with Western Digital high-performance, low-latency NVMe flash storage and NVMe-over-Fabric networking, and the powerful file-, block- and object storage backup capabilities in the OSNexus software-defined storage platform.

Online Design Utility Tool – The best way to started deploying a multi-tenant environment is use the  OSNexus online design utility tool which allows you to configure the solution architecture for a storage cluster solution for scale-up (SAN/NAS) and scale-out (unified file- block- object storage) requirements.  (Not sure about the differences between scale-up vs. scale-out object storage?)

Begin by selecting your project’s Usable Capacity storage requirements (starting at 8 terabytes up to multiple petabytes). The design utility tool ensures the correct amount of storage allocated by issuing a warning if the selected amount of flash storage is insufficient.

Next, select from a list of available Use Cases, including general backup and archiving, large and multi-site archiving, desktop and server virtualization, and custom configurations. From there the hardware selection and other settings can be adjusted to optimize the solution for any given application.

After the Usable Capacity and Use Cases are selected, the design tool selects preset server/cluster specifications (pool data, metadata and write-log devices),  storage configuration (replication or erasure encoding storage layouts, data compression, reserves), and license summary (support level, license duration and capacity) based on real-world deployment and production best-practices.

The design tool automatically selects from standardized OEM hardware (storage, compute, memory, networking) that has been certified by OSNexus to enable environments the QuantaStor SDS platform best-performs through a series of performance benchmarks and stress-tests.

  • NVMe Configurations – For flash storage requirements, the design utility tool recommends the Western Digital OpenFlex Data24, Data60 and Data102 JBOF disk enclosures for high-performance, low-latency applications, workloads and services.
  • Hybrid Configurations (NVMe/HDD) – QuantaStor object storage clusters can be deployed using all-flash media or a hybrid mix of NVMe and HDDs for greater cost efficiency at scale. For hybrid configurations about 2% to 3% of the total capacity of the cluster must be flash based with NVMe media preferred. The design utility ensures that the correct amount is allocated by showing a warning if the selected amount of flash storage is insufficient.

Solution Consultation – Require a customized architecture solution? The hardware selection and other settings can be adjusted to optimize the solution for any given application. Our dedicated sales team have experience designing and deploying secure and reliable multi-tenant QuantaStor storage clusters on a variety of standard hardware platforms, and can assist your organization configuring a solution architecture based on real-world production deployments and networking requirements.
